Haiti:the Magic Land

HAITI: THE MAGIC LAND

By Alejandro Guevara Onofre

INTRODUCTION

In 1492 Christopher Columbus wrote about Haiti: “The most beautiful in the world”. Certainly, Haiti is a wonderful country in the Caribbean. I think that has a special beauty, with a geography and traditional culture that is totally different from all the other countries in Latin America.

Now, this essay is a historical information about Haiti, the first black republic in the modern history and one of the poorest nations on Earth. Each chapter provides details on history, economy, biographies, sport, awards, foreign relations, culture and other important aspects of Haiti. The people that don’t know Haiti very much think that Haiti is only one of the world’s poorest countries, but the Island is known for its traditional culture, hospitality, superstitions, history. Furthermore, Haiti is the home to National Park History, one of the ancient wonders of the world, and renowned women such as Edwidge Danticat and Michaëlle Jean were born there.

Since then, the dictatorships have destroyed Haitian society, economy, ecology and sport. Since 1950, two million Haitian people emigrated to the United States and other countries. Haitian-American arrived from Haiti with nothing more than their clothes. If we compare the Haiti of today to Haiti of thirty years ago, we see a change: a new multiparty democracy. Today, a vast part of the Third World and more than a billion people are under dictatorships.

Eventually, I would like to finish my introduction with a message by Albert Mangones: “Haiti is unique in history, going directly from slavery to nationhood”.

CHRONOLOGY:

1492: Columbus discovered Haiti in the 15th Century.

1520-1697: Haiti is a Spanish territory. In the late 1500 and early 1600, African slaves flocked to Island.

1697-1790: Haiti is a French colony. After 16th Century, Haiti became the most important French colony in the Americas. Island´s export to Europe included sugar, coffee and corn. The beauty of Haiti is recognized by the French in the mid-1700 Century, when they called it “Pearl the Caribbean”.

1790-1803: During the French colonization slaves suffers from maltreatment. By the late 1790, pro-independence demonstrations. An Anti-slavery movement under Toussaint L´Ouverture began. L´Ouverture is one of the most important black leaders in the history. During this period of time, Haitian slaves attack villages. Anti-French protests riots brutally suppressed. By the late 1803, under leadership of Jean Jacques Dessalines, Haiti army defeated the French forces at the Battle of Vertieres.

1804-1806:A French colony for more than hundred years, Haiti becomes independent, one of the most important events in the history. Jean Jacques Dessalines became the first president of new republic of Haiti, the first black republic in the modern history. Dessalines is the “Father of Modern Haiti”. Haiti occupies the Western third of Hispaniola, the second-largest Island in the Caribbean.

1804-1820: Unfortunately; Haiti is divided into two zones. Northern Haiti is occupied by Henri Christopher, who is named Emperor, while the north is occupied by Alexander Petion. Petion is probably the greatest Haitian politician who ever lived.

1880: Haiti has one of the richest ecosystems in the Caribbean.

1900: Haiti´s modern political has been tumultuous, marked by dictatorships

1915-1934: Haiti has not had an effective national government Invasion by United States forces. US troops sent to Haiti during civil sub-war.

1918: The Presidential Palace, one of the best national palaces in the world, is originally designed by the Haitian Georges Bassan. Bassan is inspired to White House Washington.

1926: Emily Greene Balch, a human rights activist, went to Haiti.

1928: Cator is the only Haitian ever to win olympic silver medal. After, Haitian athlete Sylvio Cator breaks the men’s long jump record in Paris. Cator was given a hero’s welcome when he returned to his country.

1937: In the Dominican Republic, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered national troops to massacre of 20000 Haitian emigrants.

1940-1950: Haiti is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Caribbean.

1944: Dewitt Peters, an American school-teacher, founded the Centre d’Art in Port -au-Prince Since 1944, Centre d’Art became the centre of the Haitian painting. It is now one of Haiti´s biggest tourist attractions, and every year thousands of people came to see the paintings and other work of Haitian art.

1945: Haiti becomes the 26th member of the United Nations in October.

1956: Haiti establishes diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan).

1956: Daniel Fignolé is President of the Provisional Council and Head of State of Haiti

1957-1971:After working for a time as a traditional doctor, Francois Duvalier became one of Haiti’s most famous doctors. In 1957, Duvalier is elected President of the Republic of Haiti. President Duvalier announced: “My government will guarantee the exercise of liberty to all Haitians”. Francois Duvalier, also known for his nickname “Papa Doc”, emerged as Head of State and quickly gained nearly absolute power. In 1961 “Papa Doc” rewrote the National Constitution. After, he became the first “President for Eternity of Haiti”. In the 1960s and 1970s “Papa Doc” popularizes superstitions ideas to Haiti through a series of important voodoo rites. The Duvalier dictatorship instituted rig press censorship. International agencies accuse government of grave human rights abuses. His regime of terror resulted in the deaths of least 30000 Haitian. The Island is one of the most dangerous countries in the Third World.

1957-1981: Haitian First Lady Simone Ovide became one of the most dominant women in the history of Haiti. Simone, wife of the most famous dictator of Haiti, gained in influence and power through corruption and crime.

1957-1989: For many decades, Haiti does not have diplomatic relations with the USSR, People’s Republic of China, Cuba, Hungary, South Africa and East Germany.

1960: The Tonton Macoutes, the brutal secret police, initiated a “Haitian genocide” in which political prisoners were tortured and executed.

1964: Joseph Eduard Gaetjens, the idol of millions of Haitians, is arrested and killed by the Tonton Macoutes, the sinister Haitian secret police. Like John Barnes (Jamaica) and Everald “Gally” Cummings (Trinidad Tobago), he was a great footballer in the Caribbean. After, Gaetjens become a world symbol of the struggle against dictatorship in the Third World. He had dual Haitian and American nationality and played at 1950 World Cup for the United States. Son of Haitian mother and Belgium father, he played for many clubs in the United States. The year 1950 was a very important year for Gaetjens: the United States beat England 1-0, the birthplace of the modern football.

1964: Francois Duvalier changed the national flag. Black and red are the colors chosen by Duvalier. Black, which is similar to the Angolan flag, represents the descendants of the patriot Francois Toussaint L’Ouverture and is also the traditional color of the Haitian people. While, red symbolizes the country`s independence. But the original flag, used since 1803, was removed in 1986 by order of the new government.

1966: Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia, arrives in Port-au-Prince. Under the leadership of Dictator Francois Duvalier, many African countries maintain official diplomatic relations with Haiti.

1967: The Comedians, a film by British director Peter Glenville, inspired in the cruel Haitian dictatorship by the Duvalier family.

1971: After Duvalier’s death, power passed to his son Jean Claude Duvalier, the man who became known throughout the world as “Baby Doc”. Baby Doc is as dictatorial as his father. Haiti is ruled by iron hand. Duvalier, best known for his anticommunist political, is omnipresent. Many opposition leaders were arrested. He is accused of human rights abuses. Thousand of Haitian people fled the country. Corruption is prevalent at all levels of government. The health system is one of the worst in the Americas.

1974: The sporting system is one of the worst in the Third World, but Haiti qualified for the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Haiti beat Trinidad-Tobago in the World Cup qualifiers. Is one of the greatest sporting moment, in the chronology, comparing it to something like Sylvio Cator, who won a silver medal in long jump in the 1928 Olympics Games in Holland.

1975: In El Salvador, Miss Haiti, Gerthie David, is named first runner up at Miss Universe Pageant… transmitting live to millions by CBS. After, Gerthie David is acclaimed in Port-au-Prince as a national heroine. Miss Haiti competed with 71 other women from around the world for the title of Miss Universe, including Miss USA, Summer Barthollomew.

1980: Like Canada, West Germany South Korea and Kenya, Haiti boycott the Moscow Olympic Games in protest for Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

1980-1986: Jean-Claude Duvalier, Haiti’s longtime dictator, married Michelle Bennett, an aristocratic lady. A little more than three months later, Bennett-Duvalier becomes First Lady of Haiti. Like Eva Peron (Argentina) or Jiang Qing (People’s Republic of China), she was a woman with great power. Michelle Bennett promoted her mulatto countrymen to positions of leadership in the dictatorship at his expense of the African-Haitians.

1982: The National History Park (La Citadelle Laferriere, Sans Souci Palace and Ramiers) is designated as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Like Machu Picchu (Peru) and Angkor What (Cambodia), the National History Park is considered among the wonders of the world.

1982: Ronald Agenor wins a gold medal in men’s tennis singles at the Central American and Caribbean Sports Games La Havana. He captures the hearts of the Island.

1983: Pope John Paul arrives in Haiti for a visit. “Things most change here”, said John Paul II.

1986: As Jean-Claude consolidated his power, he consistently refused to consider constitutional reform. Seeming end to long Haitian dictatorship with fall of Duvalier regime.

1987: Haiti has one of the America’s rates of HIV infection

1987: The New Constitution restored many of the liberties abolished by the Duvalier family. The National Constitution recognizes both French and Creole as official languages. A new opposition emerged under Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

1988: Writer Rene Depestre wins the Prix Ranandot. Depestre, a Haitian dissident now living in France, was cited his novel Hadriana dans tous mes reves. By the mid-1980s Rene Depestre had become well known in literacy circles outside Haiti.

1990: Ertha Pascall-Trouillot becomes the first black woman elected of head of state in the world.

1990: First multi-party elections. Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a charismatic black leader, was elected president of Haiti. Aristide is the first democratic president since 1804. He was elected with the most popular support of any Haitian presidential candidate in the history.

1991: Military coup in the country. Raoul Cedras, leader of the coup, emerged as head of the new government. This year marked the end of eight months of democracy. Under new government, all political parties were dissolved.

1991-1995: Like Equatorial Guinea, Cuba and North Korea, Haiti has one of the most serious human rights problems in the Third World.

1993: United Nations imposed economic sanctions on Haiti, one of the most densely populated nations in the Americas.

1994: Peaceful occupation by United States forces to restore democratic electoral system. Raoul Cedras and his family went into exile in Panama City. Aristide was restored to power.

2000: Haiti is one of the thirty poorest countries in the Third World.

2000-2001: The elections were boycotted by the main opposition political parties. Aristide was again elected President. Widespread violent in Haiti allege that Aristide’s election victory is fraudulent. Total political censorship exists in national media.

2004: This year Haiti is celebrating the 200th Anniversary of their National Independence. President Jean-Bertrand Aristide of Haiti flees to Central African Republic following anti-government demonstrations. Haiti has one of the most violent conflict areas in the Americas. After, UN troops sent to Haiti during civil sub-war.

2006: Rene Preval is sworn in as President of Haiti. Since the peaceful transfer of power in February, Haiti is the newest democracy in the Third World.

ECONOMY

Like Bangladesh, Uganda or Tanzania, Haiti is one of the poorest countries on Earth. In 1997, the Haiti’s economic growth rate (real GDP) per capita was U$ 1,300. GDP per capita for Namibia, Botswana and Equatorial Guinea are higher than for Haiti. In the country 4 million people living on less than U$2 a day. More than 6 million of the Haiti’s population still does not have access to potable water and electricity. For years of dictatorships had left the country’s economy in ruins. The country dependent on international aid. Several hundred thousand farm workers migrate each year to Dominican Republic.

In 1997, total exports for the year were U$110 million, while total imports were US$ 486 million. Since 1804, the US market has been the most important export destination for Haiti. Nearly 80 percent of Haiti’s total exports are destined for the United States. Haiti’s exports include sisal, mangoes, coffee, cotton, bauxite, and sugar. The Island’s imports from the United States include cement, oil, food, machinery and transport equipment. France has been the second largest exports destination for Haitian products.

In the past, the tourism industry occupied an eminent place in the Haitian economy, but several political problems have blocked tourism. Haiti was the first country in the Caribbean to promote tourism in an accelerated form. Haiti is a small country with vast mountains, tropical beaches and beautiful historic buildings.

CULTURE

Like Katherine Dunham, Lillian Hellman, W. B. Seabrook, Erik Leonard Ekman, Alejo Carpentier, Selden Rodman, Noel Coward and Angeline Jolie, many people say that Haiti is the most beautiful country in the Caribbean. Known as the “Magic Land”, Haiti is famous for its culture. Certainly, Haiti its culture, its superstitions and its music. The superstitions or voodoo plays a profound role in the lives of many Haitians. The voodoo was introduced into Haiti in the late 16th Century. Haiti is also famous for its painting, and finally for its ruins…for example the Sans Souci Palace, the most famous ruins in the Caribbean. Exactly, this enigmatic palace is considered a Cultural Heritage for Humanity by UNESCO. Originally constructed by black slaves, now Sans Souci is one of Haiti’s main tourist attractions.

Since the late 1940s, Haitian painting, best known as “naïve art” or “intuitive art”, is famous all around the World. The most important figure was Hector Hyppolite. His work made its biggest splash in the United States in the 20th Century. Other artists known internationally include Rigaud Benoit, Castera Bazile, Joseph Jean-Giles and Jean-Baptista Bottlex. Haiti is famous for its traditional sculpture. The best Haitian sculptor is Albert Mangoes.

FAMOUS HAITIAN

Nelust Wyclef Jean (singer/Haitian-American): Original member of 1990s hip hop group The Fugees. Wyclef Jean is probably the most popular Haitian singer of all time. Jean was born in Croix des Bouquets (Haiti) on October 17, 1972. When he was just ten years old, he moved to the United States. Under leadership of Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill, The Fugees had several hits in the 1990s, including The Score (The Score album sold 6 million copies). Since 1997, Wyclef Jean, as soloist, became well-known on the international music scene. Like songwriter and producer, Jean collaborated with superstars as Santana, Withney Houston, Mick Jagger,Bono,Tevin Cambpell, Bounty Killer, Eric Benet, Sarah Connor, Claudette Ortiz, Tarkan, Michael Jackson, Youssou N´Dor, Shakira, Olga Tañon, Carlos Ponce and Julio Voltio. During the last seven years, he has sold more than 10 millions albums worldwide. In 2002, his single Masquerade was a great success.

Since then, Wyclef Jean is a man that always works with love for Haiti, one of the World’s poorest countries. Recently, he makes perhaps his best work: “Yele Haiti”, a foundation which works for the human development in the Island. Like Miriam Makeba in South Africa or Bianca Jagger in Nicaragua, Jean loves his roots. In an interview for Magazine, Wyclef Jean discussed about Haitian roots: “I am 100% Haitian. I am proud to be Haitian. I still have my Haitian passport. I represent Haiti in everything that I do. Every head in the industry knows that I am Haitian…they know what I’m about. I was Haitian forst. Haitian till die!”, said Jean.

SPECIAL AWARDS

Gerthie David “The Black Goddess”

In 1975, many Haitian people were shocked to open their newspapers and see photographs of Gerthie David Miss Haiti in El Salvador. On the night of July 19th 1975, in San Salvador, Gerthie David, Miss Haiti, was the second black woman to first runner-up in the history of Miss Universe Pageant. After winning the Miss Haiti title, Gerthie went to San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, to enter the Miss Universe Contest. The competence was exhausting, very hard, for example Miss Bolivia, Jackeline Gammarra, great favorite, was eliminated. This day, Miss Haiti looks like a black goddess. Her exotic beauty and charming personality are amazing! Certainly, Miss Haiti captive to the judges Sarah Vaughan (American black singer), Maribel Arrieta (Miss El Salvador 1955 and First runner-up at Miss Universe 1955), Jean Claude Killy (French sportsmen) and Leon Uris(American writer ).

SPORTS

Like in Brazil or Italy, the football is the most popular sport in Haiti. Certainly, the national pastime is the football. A different of the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico, the Haitian people don’t like the baseball. In the 20th Century, football became the most popular sport in the Island, thanks to such heroes as Sylvio Cator, Joseph Gaetjens and Emmanuel Sanon. In 1974 Haiti qualified for the World Cup in Germany.

Emmanuel Sanon was one of the Haiti’s most popular players and played at the 1974 World Cup. Sanon made a great contribution to Haitian football because he played in more World Cup qualifiers any other Haitian. He is still very popular with local fans. Other phenomenal talent was Joseph Eduard Gaetjens. He represented both Haiti and the United States. His beautiful play in the Brookhattan Club made in a national star. In 1953, he played for Haiti for the first time.

It’s practically impossible to talk about Haitian athletes without mentioning Sylvio Cator. He is a legend in this sport. Cator won the silver medal in the long jump at 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Cator returned home to a hero’s welcome. From 1928 to 1930, he was record man in the long jump. Cator was a marvelous jumper and footballer. He also played an important role in popularizing football in the Island (it was the captain of Haitian National Team).

Since then, he is an example for young people in Haiti. He died in November 1938, but today the people of Haiti still think of him with respect. Many years after Cator’s death, the National Stadium in Por-au-Prince was renamed in his honor. Cator was the first of the great Caribbean sportsmen that would come to dominate world track and field.

Although she has lived in the United States for many years, the actress and former fashion model Garcelle Beauvais was born in Saint Marc, a city in Haiti, in 1966. She is perhaps best known for her role as Francesca Monroe on TV’s the Jamie Foxx Show. Like Gerthie David, Joelle Apollon, Evelyn Miot, and Marjorie Vincent, she has the classic beauty of the Haitian black woman

Bryce’s Pet Peeves of the Week

“Never trust a person who doesn’t have at least one known vice (e. g. , drinking, smoking, swearing). ”
- Bryce’s Law

INTRODUCTION

On August 1st of last year, my “Management Visions” (MV) broadcast premiered on the Internet. MV is a free Internet broadcast (aka “Podcast”) that is updated weekly (on Mondays) and is made available in MP3, WMA, and RealPlayer file formats (the RealPlayer is accompanied by graphics). During the broadcast, I discuss subjects related to Information Resource Management IRM), review upcoming events of interest, and review e-mails from listeners. I also describe my “Pet Peeve of the Week” which represents items irritating me at the moment. This has turned into a popular part of the show and, as such, I am including them herein for those of you who missed the broadcast. Hopefully, you will be able to relate to some of these peeves. They are meant to offer some humorous insight into current topics of interest. I hope you will enjoy them. Please note that these are my own opinions and do not necessarily represent the opinions of my company or any other group.

AUGUST 8, 2005 - BOUNTY COMMERCIAL

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is a Bounty commercial I recently heard on the radio while driving into work the other day. Now as many of you know, Bounty is Proctor & Gamble’s “Quilted Quicker Picker-Upper” paper towels, which I don’t have a problem with as such. We use Bounty in our house. However, the new radio ad described it as having “a new blue-dot quilting” that results in a “high resolution shine. ” Frankly, when I heard this I burst out laughing. People in the cars next to me must have thought I had lost my mind. “High resolution shine”? I guess it seems funny to me to see something as mundane as paper towels go “high tech”. Ah, you gotta love Madison Avenue I guess.

AUGUST 15, 2005 - MICROSOFT WINDOWS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is Microsoft’s Windoze operating system. I recently purchased two computers for the office; one a laptop and the other a desktop, both equipped with
the latest version of Windows XP. I had to migrate a lot of data to both machines which offhand, shouldn’t be a big deal. It was. Now, I don’t consider myself a technical guru by any stretch of the imagination but rather I like to consider myself a “power user” who knows his way around a computer.

I’ve installed a lot of operating systems over the years, both beta and production versions. Now, a lot of you know me as an advocate of IBM’s old OS/2 Warp operating system which I still consider the best 32-bit operating system on the block. Nonetheless, my track record of being able to crash a Windows operating system remains intact, for I had no end of problems and found it an extremely frustrating experience. I guess I’ve been spoiled by OS/2 with its object oriented desktop, System Object Model, and preemptive multitasking. I am still at a loss as to why IBM abandoned it.

But in my mind, I can’t imagine why anyone would bother wasting their time inventing computer viruses and worms when you have something like Windoze out there. The only thing that goes uninterrupted is Microsoft’s cash-flow. And no, Virginia, there is no o. s. monopoly out there is there?

AUGUST 22, 2005 - SOFTWARE TESTING

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is software testing. As I mentioned in my essay, there is a simple “bottom-up” way to test and install systems. However, I am concerned about the way software vendors are testing their products these days, if at all. The industry has fallen into the nasty habit of letting the customers test the products. For example, it is not uncommon anymore for people to get “beta” releases of software products, play with it, and report back to the manufacturer on problems encountered with it. Further, major releases of software products are being shipped with the manufacturers knowing
full-well the products are “buggy. ” To pacify customers, they offer free upgrades of the next release (which actually represents the final version).

This approach to software testing is offensive to me.

I used to beta-test software products for vendors, but I no longer have the time nor inclination to do the manufacturer’s work for them anymore. Further, I no longer rush out to buy the latest release of “any” software product; I have been burned too many times by the vendors. As far as I’m concerned, the software vendors really need to clean up their act when it comes to testing. If they really want us to test their products for them,
let us know where we should send the bill.

AUGUST 29, 2005 - MICROMANAGEMENT

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is something a little different: micromanagement. There is a general inclination in the workplace today for managers to try and control “everything”; that nothing happens without the manager’s personal stamp of approval. I have also seen this phenomenon occurring in nonprofit organizations, everything from computer societies, to homeowner associations, garden clubs, little leagues, and, Yes, even Masonic Lodges.

Micromanagement represents a Theory X style of management, which means the organization is basically led by a dictator. Now, in some situations, I can understand the need for this. But for the workplace in general as well as our volunteer organizations, I am at a loss as to why people are doing this. One nasty byproduct of micromanagement is that people become complacent and will only do what they are told and nothing more. They evolve into robots with little loyalty for the institutions they work for.

Having played football on the gridiron years ago, I learned a lot about the concept of teamwork. In any team-type of environment you have several players, but only one coach who is responsible for the game plan. However, trying to control the actions of every player on the field is not only infeasible, it can be counterproductive. I have always found it to be more effective to empower people to make decisions and hold them responsible for their actions. People will not seek responsibility and will only put forth the minimum effort if they are not given some latitude. I always liked Ronald Reagan’s comment on his management style when he said, “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out. ”

In other words, ease up on the micromanagement, empower your people, give them direction, but don’t tell how to do everything in meticulous detail.

Bottom-line: Do more management and less supervision.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2005 - UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” are University programs that profess to offer a systems curriculum, but in reality, concentrate on nothing more than software development. I am often asked to give overviews of “PRIDE” at universities, normally at the MBA level, and am appalled on how superficially the colleges gloss over the fundamentals of true systems work. Normally, the curriculum offers an introductory course on systems but little else. Instead, they tend to focus on programming languages, networking, and computer trends. Small wonder when I start to talk about “PRIDE”, with its engineering/manufacturing concepts, the students look at me dumbfounded. Terms like “Product Structure,” “Blueprinting,” “Bill of Materials,” MRP, and Production Control are foreign concepts to most systems students. Consequently, our universities are spitting out more software people than we really need. A lot of the customers I deal with are looking for students who can grasp business concepts, know how to interview users, know basic math in order to prepare proposals, understand work flows and work measurement, and write effectively. Frankly, they are screaming for more systems people as opposed to the software candidates churned out by the colleges.

SEPTEMBER 12, 2005 - THE DEATH OF COMMON COURTESY

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the death of common courtesy. The other day we had a new FedEx driver make a delivery at our office in Palm Harbor. Since I happened to be by the front door, I opened it and watched him approach. He wore a scowl on his face as if he had been having a bad day. I opened the door, greeted him warmly, shook his hand and asked how his day was going. As I signed for the delivery, the driver looked at me strangely. I asked him if there was a problem. He said, No, it was just that I was the first person that day to be friendly to him and actually ask how he was doing. He said in most companies he visits he’s pretty much taken for granted and treated rudely.

I asked if he thought this was something unique to him as an individual. He said, No, the other drivers often speak of the callousness of their clientele. Come to think of it, I have seen evidence of this elsewhere. For example, when I go to a restaurant, the waiters and waitresses are often taken aback when I kid with them and ask them about their day. Often they look at me like I might have some ulterior motive. But once they get past this, they warm up to me and we have a good working relationship.

This made me stop and think about today’s corporate work place. Have we become so jaded and insensitive as to disregard the interpersonal relationships of our employees, our customers, and our vendors? Have we become so self-centered and aloof that we no longer care how we treat other people?

You know, I learned a long time ago that you can catch a heckova lot more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. A little courtesy and hospitality can go a long way with people. For example, I learned the virtues of a firm handshake some time ago. I don’t just give them some wishy-washy handshake and look through the person. I look them squarely in the eyes, shake their hand and tell them how glad I am to see them. Something as simple as a sincere handshake can work miracles.

We must remember that we don’t conduct our business with inanimate objects, but rather with human beings. Sharpening our people skills is incredibly important to accomplish anything worthwhile in life. Simple common courtesy is a big part of this. Try it. Next time that FedEx or UPS driver comes to
your door or a waitress to your table, look up at them, greet them with a smile and ask them how they’re doing; heck, even often them a handshake. You will be pleasantly surprised with the service you’ll get in return. I’ll tell you this; we have no problems with shipments or deliveries at our office. How about yours?

SEPTEMBER 19, 2005 - THE COMPUTER PRESS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the Press. No, not the general press as distorted as it may be, but rather, the computer trade press. Years ago we had numerous publications you could count on to print an unbiased view of the industry. Publications such as “Infosystems,” “Datamation,” “Computer Decisions,” and the “EDP Analyzer” were able to give balanced reporting while still generating sufficient advertising dollars to sustain
themselves. But something happened along the way in the 1990’s with the propagation of the PC in the workplace. Suddenly, new interests and allegiances were formed and the trade press basically sold its soul to upstart vendors who now command the market. This resulted in jaded reporting and, unfortunately, the credibility of the various publications have diminished. So much so that circulation of the publications are at an all time low. Even “InfoWorld” and “Computerworld” are mere shadows of themselves.

What is missing is a little integrity in the trade press. Instead of trying to invent the next fad, how about some honest reporting on what is actually going on in this industry, both right AND wrong. I’ve got news for you, not everything is as peaches and cream in this industry, regardless of what the press tells you.

SEPTEMBER 26, 2005 - WORKAROUNDS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is the word “workaround” as has been commonly used in the IT field for the last ten years. I tried looking up “workaround” in both Webster’s and The New Heritage Dictionary and, of course, I couldn’t find it. As
we all know, it has come to mean finding a way around a technical problem. It doesn’t mean its a correction to a problem but rather, a way of addressing a problem. But make no mistake about it, “workarounds” ultimately represent errors or bugs in the system and we should refer to them as such. I’m amazed by programmers when they proudly proclaim they’ve found a “workaround” as opposed to admitting they have a problem and don’t know how to fix it.

An IT Department should avoid the term “workaround” as it tends to irritate end-users and causes them to lose faith in the development staff’s ability for solving their problems. A bug is a bug, I don’t care what you call it; don’t try to sugarcoat it, fix it.

As an aside, I was finally able to find “workaround” defined in one dictionary, the Redneck Dictionary. Its typically used to determine the location of employees. For example, “Hey Y’all workaround here?”

I don’t know, I guess I’m getting tired of the sloppy language in this business.

OCTOBER 3, 2005 - MICROSOFT

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is Microsoft, whom I refer to as the Howard Johnsons of the computer business (with apologies to HJ). We call them this because they offer products that are never state of the art, but they are not the worst either; just mediocre and very predictable.

Recently, I read that Microsoft announced its Windows Workflow Foundation (or WWF - which sounds remarkably like the World Wrestling Federation). Nonetheless, WWF is a Windows technology that will enable developers to stitch together MS Office applications and in-house developed software into workflow applications. Here again is another example of “bottom-up” system design. Instead of first determining requirements and designing the overall system architecture, they are proposing a means to assemble programs bottom-up. Vintage Microsoft. Frankly, I think they should stick to wrestling.

OCTOBER 10, 2005 - CORPORATE DRESS CODES

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is corporate dress codes. Back in the 1970’s it was generally expected that a man wear a suit and tie to work and women dressed well. During the 1980’s this code was relaxed and you would see “dress down” days on Fridays. By the 1990’s suits and ties had been replaced by golf shirts and slacks. But now, in 2005, we see t-shirts, blue jeans and shorts in the workplace.

Ben Stein recently wrote an interesting piece in the New York Times complaining about the slovenly appearance of corporate America which I have to agree with. I think we have gone too far. Dress codes have an impact on the corporate culture of any business. If we dress sharp, we tend to think smart. If we dress sloppy, we tend to be lazy in our work habits. Show me a workplace without a dress code and I’ll show you a pigsty that produces questionable results. I know we like to promote
rugged individualism in this country, but there is nothing wrong with a little uniformity and teamwork either.

When we started our company in the early 1970’s, our dress code was “business casual” except when we knew customers were coming into the office where we were then expected to spruce up and dress professionally. Over time, we abandoned business casual and mandated at least a shirt and tie for men and proper attire for women. This had a positive effect, particularly on our IT staff. What I found interesting though was while we, as a small business, were learning to “dress up”, corporate America began to “dress down. ”

Ben Stein was right in criticizing today’s corporate dress codes. After all, who would you rather do business with, someone who looks like a bum or someone dressed for success and has their act together? I think the answer is rather obvious.

OCTOBER 17, 2005 - CELL PHONES

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is cell phones. As you will remember, cell phones first became popular with doctors and other members of the medical community who rightly saw it as a vital link between their patients and themselves. Next came business people who needed mobility to talk with their office and clients. This included realtors, salesmen and service people. But then it landed in the hands of housewives and children under the clever ruse that it was a great way to get in touch with our loved ones in the event of an emergency. And this is when all hell broke loose. Now, it seems everyone has one, not only on their hips or in their ears, but in their cars, on their motorcycles. I’ve even seen kids talking on them while skateboarding, riding bicycles, and, Yes, even tricycles. Its now more of an annoying habit than a working tool or status symbol.

What I find amusing is how it has affected our social skills. Its now common to find people walking alone on a street or in a store seemingly talking to themselves. Maybe they are and the cell phone is nothing but a clever ruse. But what disturbs me more than anything is how people jabber away on the phone while they’re in traffic. Now you know darn well not everyone has something vital to communicate all of the time. It is now common to see 16 year old girls talking to their boyfriends and making plans for the weekend; moms chatting with their girlfriends, guys talking with their buds, and so on. We’re doing everything but paying attention to the road. Have we become so bored with our lives that we find it necessary to talk to someone just to kill time while in traffic? I guess so.

In 1967, James Coburn starred in a movie called “The President’s Analyst” which has become a cult classic. If you haven’t seen the picture, Coburn uncovers a plot by the telephone company to implant a chip into everyone’s head whereby everyone can send and receive telephone calls (I’d love to see how they would handle faxes). Nonetheless the movie is very prophetic in terms of where cell phones are heading. I’m just worried about the social implications.

Please do me one small favor though, if you find it absolutely necessary to talk to someone on the phone while you’re driving around, please pull off to the side of the road and talk to the person like a rational human being. And Yes, I am very much in favor of legislation regulating the use of cell phones.

OCTOBER 24, 2005 - BLOATWARE

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Bloatware. ” Ever notice when you get a new computer how fast it runs, Yet, over time it starts to slow to a crawl. This is primarily attributed to
what is called “bloatware” in the industry. Years ago, programmers were very careful in how they wrote software. The code was very tight and there was concern over efficient use of machine resources. But as disk space, memory, and processor capabilities grew, programmers became less and less concerned with machine efficiency. I remember just a few years ago I was able to install IBM’s OS/2 operating system on a PC with 50mb of disk space, and it ran just fine with plenty of room to spare on my hard drive. But the times have changed; hardware improvements and the Internet have seen to that. But the programming is getting sloppier and sloppier. If you have tried to install a word processor or a graphics package lately you know what I mean.

I can’t help feeling this is all a grand scheme to build-in obsolescence into our computers. Slowing down software means purchasing additional hardware. Understand this, a computer is considered an antique when it reaches three years old. We would probably hold onto our computers longer if we didn’t have so much bloatware running on them. But I guess that wouldn’t be good for the economy.

OCTOBER 31, 2005 - GUESTIMATE

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the word “Guestimate. ” I have been involved in the IRM field for a long time now and it has always bugged me how people try to invent new words in an attempt to appear cute and clever. One such word is “Guestimate” which tries to imply that performing an estimate is simply a guess, to which I have to give a big DUH. Estimating is fundamentally an effort at projecting the future. Like all projections, the more facts and information available, the better the estimate will be, but rarely is it ever perfect. There is a natural human tendency to avoid making estimates because estimates are expressions of commitments, and people tend to shy away from commitments and accountability, particularly when they are not sure of the facts. Look, lets keep it simple, an estimate is an estimate and a guess is a guess, let’s not create any more 3rd grade words such as “guestimate. ”

Another word that bothers me is “reiterate” and you hear it just about everywhere these days. Think about it; what does it mean? The word Iterate refers to the repetition of something. So what do we mean when we say RE-iterate? An infinite loop? The language in the IT industry is sloppy enough without us having to add new words to our vocabulary. But I guestimate I am reiterating myself.

NOVEMBER 7, 2005 - COMPLICATIONS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is entitled, “Why do we make things more complicated than they really are?” Over the last 30 years I have been fortunate to travel the world, visit with
many corporate customers, and hobnob with gurus in the field. One thing I’ve always found fascinating is how the IT industry tends to make things more complicated than they really are. For example, building systems and software is really not as complicated as they appear to be. Systems consist of business processes, procedures and programs. We also have inputs for collecting data, outputs for transmitting information, files for storing data, records, and data elements. Period. It has always been this way and it will always be this way. But the IT Industry seems to reinvent itself every five years or so. We now like to talk about apps, agile programming, data mining, SOA, business rules, meta data, and things that go bump in the night. The only rationale I can give for changing the vocabulary so often is that it must sell a lot of books and magazines. Either that or people use it to make themselves look smarter than they really are. The sad part is that this new vernacular is creeping into college studies and we then have to spend the next several years debriefing the kids. I don’t know, as I get older, I find the better things in life are the simple things. I guess I’m surprised that more people don’t challenge needless complexity.

NOVEMBER 14, 2005 - SNOWBIRDS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is entitled “Snowbirds. ” November marks the beginning of the snowbird migration. This is where northerners, predominantly retirees, begin to make their annual trek down here to Florida. Sure, their money is nice for our economy but we have to contend with some God-awful drivers. There are New Yorkers in SUV’s who think they own the road, people from Ontario who believe they are always driving in a school zone, and others from the midwest who are just plain lost. It sure would be nice if we had a national driving standard. It would make it a heckova lot easier and safer down here for all of us if we did.

NOVEMBER 21, 2005 - SMOKING

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society last Thursday, November 17th. As many of you know I enjoy a good cigar. I never acquired a taste for cigarettes but I definitely enjoy a good cigar when I’m going about my business. I don’t bother anyone with it. Its just something I do on my own time. Yes, I am aware of the dangers of smoking, as I am sure all smokers are. And, No, I do not consider myself a smoking advocate. Having said all this, let me just say to all the Anti-smokers out there: Will you please get off our backs! Being a smoker doesn’t mean we’re demons or some misguided fools, but we sure get characterized this way. The Anti-Smokers are making it harder and harder to find a venue for us to enjoy our pleasure, everything from airplanes and airports, to restaurants and bars, the workplace, even cars. Next, will be our homes where I definitely draw a line and tell them to mind their own business. I will continue to enjoy my cigar regardless of the browbeating I may take from the Anti-Smoking lobby. I don’t think they realize that as they become more obnoxious in their campaign, it stiffens my resolve to enjoy a good smoke.

I will also remind you of one of my more memorable Bryce’s Laws that says, “Never trust a person who doesn’t have at least one known vice (e. g. , drinking, smoking, swearing). ” I have always found that such a lily white person always has a dark side or something they are trying to hide. As for me, I’ll continue to enjoy my cigars and keep my vices aboveboard.

NOVEMBER 28, 2005 - MICROMANAGEMENT

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Micromanagement. ” Today we live in a Theory X world where managers like to dictate the specifics of any given task which is commonly referred to as “micromanagement. ” Employees are told what to do and when to do it, without any interest in their input. Such an approach is basically saying to the worker, “Look, you’re not smart enough to do this right so I’m going to tell you how to do it. ” Consequently, micromanagement tends to irritate and alienate people. More recently, I’ve noticed this same phenomenon occurring in nonprofit volunteer organizations, such as homeowner associations, clubs, school organizations, sports associations, and even church groups. The people that run these groups may have the best intentions, but rarely do they know how to actually manage. Sadly, some people get involved with such organizations to satisfy a petty power trip they are on. They have little regard for organization and adherence to policies and rules. Instead, they try to micromanage everything. People, particularly volunteers, have a natural aversion to micromanagement and quickly lose interest in their work.

Instead, I recommend an approach where you delegate responsibility and hold people accountable for their actions. I refer to this as managing from the “bottom-up” as opposed to
“top-down. ” By treating workers like responsible adults, there is a tendency to accept responsibility and see a task through to its successful completion. As President Ronald Reagan said, “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out. ”

Basically, Reagan said, “Don’t micromanage; empower your staff and get out of the way. ”

DECEMBER 5, 2005 - RERUNS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Reruns. ” Last week it was announced that the Rolling Stones were going to perform the half-time show for the 40th Super Bowl next February in Detroit. I found this announcement somewhat amusing in that Paul McCartney of the Beatles provided the half-time entertainment in the last Super Bowl. Its not that I have anything against these aging rockers, as I have been a big Beatles and Stones fan for the last 40 years, I’m just wondering where the new talent is or if there really is any talent to replace my generation’s music. We hear a lot about Rap, Hip-Hop, and Country, but who are the musicians who truly define this generation? Frankly, they’re not our there. Oh, I’m not suggesting the talent doesn’t exist, for I believe it does, but it is being tightly controlled by marketers who engineer every note being recorded today.

In the old days, it was not uncommon for artists to write their own music, sing their own songs, and play their own instruments. This is hardly the case any more. Instead of developing a generation of craftsmen like the Beatles and the Stones, the current wave of musicians are simply marketing “flash in the pans” that have no staying power. The Beatles and the Stones are great, but ultimately their music represents reruns which is indicative of the artistic void that has been created by the media moguls. Take Hollywood for example; How many times are we going to remake King Kong, the Pink Panther and just about every TV show from the 1960’s? Instead of computer generated graphics, how about some creative plots and well written scripts? I can’t believe we’ve run out of ideas in Hollywood, so much so that they find it necessary to reproduce old stories. Does the younger generation really lack any form of creativity? I seriously doubt it. They’re just not being allowed to express it and, instead, we have to sit through reruns. I’m becoming increasingly concerned what effect this stagnation in our culture will ultimately have on us. To me, it represents complacency and signals a decline in our ability to strive to achieve. It also represents another indication of the “micromanagement” going on in the corporate world. Consider this, if the Beatles and Stones were to emerge in today’s world, they probably wouldn’t be allowed to practice their craft.

Oh well, I guess I’ll go home, turn on the television and listen to Led Zepplin sell Cadillacs.

DECEMBER 12, 2005 - SERVICE (THE LACK THEREOF)

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Service” (the lack thereof). Recently I stopped by a new cigar shop to buy some cigars. I went into their humidor and checked their inventory. There were several custom-rolled cigars made on the premises as well as the usual commercial cigars from the Dominican Republic and the Honduras. I happened to find my favorite (which is a Hoyo de Monterey, Sultan/Maduro) and took a dozen of them up to the cashier for purchase. Ahead of me in line was a gentleman also purchasing a dozen cigars all of the same kind. I noticed the cashier was painfully slow in scanning and recording each cigar. Next to her at the counter was the shop owner who was preoccupied reading a magazine. There were other customers also in the shop, all of which were of no concern to the cashier or owner.

What should have been a simple transaction for the guy in front of me took at least ten minutes. Fortunately, I was in no hurry, but I was starting to become impatient nonetheless over a simple purchase. When she finally finished the transaction, the cashier greeted me, took my cigars and began the laborious task of scanning and recording my order (again, a simple transaction turned into a lengthy task). As she processed the last cigar, I pulled out my wallet and presented her with my credit card. She looked at it and said, “Oh, I’m sorry our credit card machine is down right now, do you have cash?”

Of course, I didn’t and suddenly I realized that after waiting twenty minutes to make a simple purchase I had come to loggerheads with her over the purchase.

I said, “Is there nothing that can be done?”

“No sir, we need cash. ”

Interestingly, the shop owner who had been listening to our banter simply kept flipping through his magazine.

I asked, “Can’t you take an imprint of my card and process it later when the machine is back up?”

“Oh, no sir, we can’t do that. ”

“In other words, instead of trying to find a way to make this sale happen, you’re telling me that I just wasted twenty minutes of my time in your store. ”

She looked at me dumbfounded and the owner turned another page in his magazine.

I told them this was the last time I would frequent their establishment and stormed out without any cigars. Frankly, I don’t think they cared one bit.

I’m sure we have all seen similar situations where there is a lack of decent service, whether it be in a retail shop, restaurant, automotive repair, in the corporate world, or wherever. People are becoming less and less sensitive to customer service. Its like they come down with a bad case of the stupids when dealing with customers.

As I was growing up, I was always taught that the customer was king; that if you took care of the customer they would return the favor with repeat business and provide sparkling references of your business to others. But evidently, the times are changing and teaching good customer service is becoming a rarity. For those of you who really don’t care about the customer, I would
remind you that everything begins with a sale and the customer should never have to wait to pay the bill. Instead of finding ways not to make a sale, here’s an idea; why not try to find ways to make it happen. But I guess that would require a little personal initiative which is something that is also sorely lacking these days.

DECEMBER 19, 2005 - HOLIDAY MADNESS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is entitled “Holiday Madness. ” December is the month where we celebrate a lot of things:

Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, although the exact date of His birth is questionable. The Jews celebrate Chanukah which represents a lengthy battle where the Syrians were driven out of Israel. Kwanzaa has been around since 1966, and unlike Christmas and Chanukah that are religious in nature, Kwanzaa celebrates African culture. We then celebrate the end of one year, and the birth of a new one. There is so much to celebrate during December that I always felt sorry for those people who were born during this month and are typically gypped out of the parties and presents they deserve.

Comedian Lewis Black recently commented on the encroachment of Christmas on other holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Halloween, that the retailers won’t be happy until the Christmas season encompasses Labor Day and the 4th of July. Lewis has a point. It is simple economics that drives this year-end holiday frenzy and little else. You don’t really believe those people fighting in WalMart over a DVD player, digital camera, or iPod are really thinking about “peace on earth, good will towards man” do you? Hardly. The holidays bring out both the best and worst in all of us, which is a shame as this is not what they were intended for. It is supposed to be a time of reflection and renewal, not traffic jams and chaos in the shopping aisles. Ever wonder what these year-end holidays would be like if the exchange of gifts were removed from the formula? They would probably be as subdued and respectful as Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day. But this will never happen as the retailers and the media holds us in their tight grip. We’ll now spend the next 90-120 days paying everything off. I’ll just be happy when the tinsel comes down, the house is cleaned up, the relatives go home, and everything returns to normal. At least until April 16th which is Easter Sunday and the sales cycle starts all over again.

Indian Cricket That Can Drive Fans Crazy

Cricket is the game of passion and enthusiasm; almost every country participates in cricket; be it as a team or as a viewer every country has developed taste for cricket. In fact, it the charm of cricket which made it so popular all over the world; as a result popularity of cricket is increasing by leaps and bounces and tournaments like world cup and T-20 are getting incredible response. India is one of the most admired participant team in world cricket; Indian cricket has its own flavor in world cricket since legendry players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar are there to make it more wonderful. Indian Cricket is the great combination of national and regional cricket teams. Each state in India has its own regional cricket team and all these teams participate in many tournaments like Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy. The best players from these regional cricket teams move forward and get opportunity to prove themselves at international level. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the biggest cricket authority for India; it bear the responsibility of selection of national team and also undertake all other decisions regarding sponsorship and role determination of every player in national cricket team. Apart from BCCI, each state has its own cricket board that conducts and control state level teams and also prepares good players for future responsibilities. No doubt, that these state level cricket authorities play a vital role in deciding future of national team; in fact our team has now get many young and energetic players like Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Pathan with the effort of these state level authorities only.

Indian cricket team got approval as test team in 1932 that was a subject of great honor for every Indian; in the same year, the team played its first test cricket match against England at Lords and really proved their potential as a good test team. After that day Indian players never looked behind and went the on track of making and breaking records. In order to that, India won the cricket world cup in 1983 and T-20 world cup few months back this year. India got its first test victory against England at Madras in 1952; afterward the same year, the team won first Test series, which was against Pakistan. That was really an indescribable experience for entire nation and after their starting victories the team improved their game throughout the decade.

In 1971 the arrival of one day international cricket shaped a new dimension in the cricket world; initially India was not very much strong in ODIs, that caused consecutive loss of matches therefore, they did not manage to qualify for the second round in the first two cricket world cups. However, every Indian cricket fan knows that there is nothing that can stop the team from getting what it deserves; perhaps, it is their heartily wishes and support that made Indian team the world cup winner in 1983 and gave all Indians a reason to celebrate cricket.

The Smackdown Low-down For 4/10/09

Pre-Show Thoughts/Events: A video package highlighting WrestleMania 25 plays. It was a pretty good WrestleMania but as has been said before it was pretty much a one match show - at least it was one for the ages. Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels will go down as one of my favorite matches ever. The rest of the show was pretty good to really good except the main event was trash. Big Show vs. Kofi Kingston: Kingston quickly springs up and hits a dropkick, sending the big man staggering. Kingston then hits a roundhouse kick in Big Show’s face and he falls back into the corner as a big thing of spit exits his mouth and falls off his tights. That was gross. Kingston now runs and leaps up to Big Show’s shoulders, punching him in the head. Big Show pushes him off and Kingston does a back flip on to his feet. Kingston ducks a Big Show clothesline and goes for another roundhouse kick but Big Show swats him down. Big Show picks him up and throws him across the ring. Big Show whips Kingston into the corner and charges but Kingston slides through the ropes and uses the ropes to propel his shin into Big Show’s head. Kingston goes to the top rope and hits a missile dropkick, staggering Big Show. Kingston goes into the ropes and hits a spinning roundhouse kick, taking Big Show down. Kingston is dancing around, goes into the ropes, and hits his Boom-Boom Leg. Kingston covers for a two count and Big Show presses him off him. Kingston now goes to the top rope and jumps off into a HUGE Knockout Punch from Big Show. Big Show then goes for the 1. . . 2. . . 3 for the win. Winner by Pinfall: Big Show A decent match to start off the new year of Smackdown(in my view). Kofi vs Show, two huge names there and really I was suspecting alot more than what happened. And AGAIN! I don’t like how this match ended with the knockout punch from Big Show. Big Show used to always do this an all it would do would make the opponent fall down but NOW it is a “powerful” finisher that ends matches right away. Seriously either go back to your old finishers Big Show or get a new one. Match Rating: 5/10 Santino Marella vs. The Great Khali: The bell rings and Santino is protesting it. Santino goes for a kick but Khali catches it and throws him back. Santino gets up and walks right into the Punjabi Plunge and Khali covers him for the win. Winner by Pinfall: The Great Khali HORRIBLE. I actually almost cried after witnessing this. Very bad choice by Smackdown to do this, cant even carry-out a storyline with it. Match Rating: 0/10 Gail Kim vs. Michelle McCool: Kim hits McCool with a nice dropkick and she goes down. McCool quickly gets back up so Gail Kim jumps up to her shoulders and hits a hurricanrana. Kim then gets a foot in McCool’s face and does a back bump but McCool messed it up on her end and it looked sloppy. It’s still a nice move though. McCool recovers on the outside while we see Diva’s Champion Maryse looking on from backstage. Kim tries to punch her from inside the ring but McCool avoids it. McCool then gets on the apron and Gail Kim greets her with a forearm. She goes for a suplex to bring McCool back in the ring but McCool counters and goes for a suplex of her own to the outside but Kim winds up on the apron. They spar on the apron until McCool throws Gail Kim shoulder first into the ring post, sending her crashing to the floor. McCool then kicks her in the face against the barricade and slides her back in the ring, covering for a two and a half count. McCool goes to put a leg down but Kim avoids it. Gail Kim hits her with some forearm shots and takes her down with a pair of clotheslines. She whips McCool into the corner and hits a leaping clothesline. McCool stumbles out of the corner and Gail Kim jumps to the second rope and back-flips into a cross-body block. Gail Kim only gets a two count. She goes up to the top rope and comes off for a missile dropkick but McCool avoids it. McCool covers and gets a one count but Gail Kim counters it into an inside cradle and pins her for the win. Winner by Pinfall: Gail Kim VERY nice match. Im starting to like the DIVA action more and more each week now. I am soooo happy that Gail Kim is back. I truely believe that she is one of the best women wrestlers of all time. She has an amazing move-set compared to all the other DIVA’s and Santino. Great match. Match Rating: 7/10 Carlito & Primo vs. Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes: DiBiase goes to the second rope and comes off with a double stomp. Somewhere Spike Dudley is bleeding on the independent circuit for a few measly bucks. . . DiBiase cover for a one count that is broken up by Carlito. DiBiase lays in the punches to Primo hard. DiBiase whips Primo hard chest first into the corner and tags in Rhodes. Rhodes sends Primo into the ropes and locks in an abdominal stretch. Primo counters out with a hip toss. Rhodes then charges and Primo hits him with a back body over the top rope. Primo is making his way to Carlito and DiBiase forces Rhodes back in the ring to try and cut Primo off but it’s too late. Carlito comes in, hits Rhodes with some left hands, goes into the ropes, and takes him down with a forearm shot. Carlito hits him with a kick to the midsection, goes into the ropes and hits a Million Dollar Knee Lift, goes back into the ropes and hits a flying clothesline. Carlito has a whip reversed on him but he ducks the clothesline attempt and dropkicks Ted DiBiase out of the ring as he tries for interference. Carlito then turns into a kick in the midsection and gets thrown into the corner. Rhodes charges and meets Carlito’s boot. Carlito goes to the top rope and Rhodes tries to stop him but he’s hit with a left hand. Then, while the referee’s back is turned, DiBiase comes on the apron and pulls Carlito off, bouncing him off the top rope, and Carlito walks right into the Cross Rhodes. Legacy picks up the win over the undisputed Tag Champs. Winners by Pinfall: Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes A pretty good tag team match. The tag teams these days just arn’t any good I believe. I mean, TNA has better tag teams than Smackdown and that is saying something! Something I didn’t like was that Carlito & Primo are the Unified Tag Team Champions. They are suppose to represent the best tag team in the WWE(even though they clearly arn’t) and they lose to a team like DiBiase & Rhodes. Although this was of course just a match to continue the hype/storyline of HHH/Shane/Batista vs. Legacy, it is still sad that they have the new champs losing to low name tag teams already. Match Rating: 6/10 Stretcher Match-Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy: Matt begins pushing the stretcher up and Jeff starts fighting so Matt punches him a few times. Jeff is holding on to the barricade to prevent him from going up the ramp further. Matt pulls him off by his leg and Jeff counters with a flipping mule kick on the concrete section - no padding there. Jeff slowly gets up, in pain, and whips Matt HARD into the steel ring steps. Jeff sets up two stretchers and puts Matt on one. Jeff begins pushing Matt up the ramp but Matt gets off before crossing the line. They fight up and down the ramp with Jeff coming off with the worst of it, falling down the ramp. Matt then tries to ram the stretcher into his head but Jeff narrowly avoids it. Matt puts Jeff back in the ring and sets up a stretcher outside of it. Matt now goes under the ring and grabs a steel chair. Matt gets on the apron with it and Jeff pushes the chair in Matt’s face, sending him off the apron. The chair is on the stretcher now and Jeff gets Matt on the apron and punches him off, with Matt falling back onto the stretcher and the chair. Matt rolls off and has his face against the stretcher as Jeff Hardy goes to the top rope and comes off, hitting the end of the stretcher, catapulting it up in Matt’s face. Todd Grisham embarrassingly calls it as Jeff overshooting a move and then corrects himself and apologizes. Jeff puts Matt on a stretcher and goes to bring him up the ramp but Matt won’t let go of the apron so Jeff sends the stretcher and Matt into the steel steps, almost lawn darting Matt into the stairs face first. Jeff bounces his face off the steel steps and puts him on the stretcher. Jeff now goes to the top rope and goes for the Swanton Bomb to the outside but Matt rolls out of the way and Jeff hits the stretcher. That was really impressive. If he overshot by even an inch. . . Matt now begins pushing Jeff up the ramp on the stretcher but Jeff is trying his best to fight off but Matt keeps punching him down. Then Matt gets the steel chair, smashes it over Jeff’s head, leaving him unconscious, allowing Matt to push Jeff up the ramp on the stretcher and over the finish line. Winner: Matt Hardy AWESOME! Just awesome. What a great match to end Smackdown. One of the greatest matches on Smackdown since awhile. I just don’t like how they are pushing Matt as the better Hardy when everyone clearly knows that Jeff is wayyyyy better than Matt. Match Rating: 9/10 This concludes tonight’s Smackdown! What’s Final Thoughts: This was a terrific episode of Friday Night Smackdown tonight. Not many storylines tonight with the draft coming up on Monday so it was very wrestling heavy, which is something that makes me very happy. Unfortunately I fear that Smackdown is going to be ripped apart in this draft so this could be the last really good episode for a while - but who knows. The big story is Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy tonight. My guess is they had the blow off to this feud already because one of them is going to Raw next week. My guess is it’ll be Jeff Hardy but I’m hoping it’ll be Matt. Maybe he can do better than on Raw - give him a fresh start. Regardless they had a great Stretcher Match tonight and their feud over the past three months has been top notch. I also hope we’ll be seeing more of John Cena and Chris Jericho, with the latter being the most likely to come over. All in all this was a great way to end the post WrestleMania week - lots of good matches tonight and a really great Cutting Edge segment. Smackdown will have a new talent pool next week but we’ll make the best of it, even though we’ll be losing some big stars, probably even JR. I’m not looking forward to potentially having Michael Cole back. Ugh! Regardless, tonight was great! NOTE: I am EXTREMELY disappointed that I had to leave out the cutting edge segment and having to shorting the tag team match commentary. I have a 2000 word limit and I try to give you the matches with the most commentary from it as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please tune in next week for the next edition of The Smackdown Low-down! Thanks for reading!

StudentScholarships.org - The Hybrid Sensation

The Hybrid car is one of the unsurpassed inventions of the 21st century. It is not only environmentally friendly but, with this car you receive better mileage and, with gas prices ever-increasing, many families across the country are saving hundreds of dollars on gas alone. When you by a hybrid car you are simply buying a better car period. Global warming could increase the number of people affected by flooding by 20 - 50 million people. Entire ecosystems may be lost and others severely impacted. According to a 2004 Pentagon report, an abrupt global climate change could bring the planet to complete devastation as countries fight to defend and secure the decreasing food, water, and energy supplies. These are just a few reasons why the hybrid car is such an influential invention. A gallon of gasoline weighs just over 6 pounds. When burned, the carbon in it combines with oxygen from the air to produce nearly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide. By switching from a gas guzzler to a hybrid, you can literally save the earth a couple of tons of greenhouse gases. If the fuel economy were improved by 5 mpg, that would save 1. 5 million barrels of oil per day. That’s approximately 55 million metric tons of carbon per day. Using such cars as hybrid cars could be a major step to alleviate global warming. All hybrids get better mileage than conventional cars. Some get better fuel mileage in stop and go traffic, while others do better on the highway. Hybrid cars also produce about 90% less smog than the average conventional car. Hybrids use NiMH batteries, not the rechargeable nickel cadmium which causes a lot of damage to the environment. “Nickel metal hydride batteries [can be] fully recycled,” says Ron Cogan, editor of the Green Car Journal. With gas prices soaring to more than $2 a gallon, there’s no smarter reason to switch to a hybrid than fuel efficiency. In fact, hybrid cars can go for more than 600 miles between fill-ups, meaning you can cut visits to your gas station in half, saving you time and money. If you drive 1,000 miles a month and your current car averages 20 miles per gallon, driving a hybrid could save $700 or more a year at the pump. Hybrids are also small, quick, and good at avoiding accidents. Toyota’s new version of the Prius, Toyota’s hybrid gas-electric automobile can even parallel park itself. People who purchase a new hybrid by the end of 2005 are eligible for a “Clean-Fuel” vehicle tax deduction of up to $2,000. New more valuable tax inducement will go into effect on January 1, 2006, as part of the “Energy Policy Act of 2005. “The hybrid is truly a remarkable invention. Whether you are looking to help the environment, or save money the Hybrid is your best option. It also doesn’t hurt that Hollywood stars like Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Larry David, and Leonardo DiCaprio just happen to be hybrid owners!

Showing Your Patriotic Spirit: World Cup and Beyond!

As the summer of 2006 approaches a number of holidays and occasions are coming that stir our patriotic spirits. Of course, in the U. S. , the most obvious occasions are the fast approaching Memorial Day and Independence Day on July 4th. On a global scale, the World Cup Soccer championship is coming around again as well. With all of these events that unite countries together in a common bond, many wonder about the best way to showcase their own patriotism. Here are some fun ideas of how to show your own patriotism no matter the occasion.

First, the most obvious way to show your love for your country is by making sure you have a beautiful US flag or country flag to show your allegiance! There is nothing like a beautiful and durable American Flag flying from a pole in front of your home, or extended from your roof or porch to show your patriotism and holiday spirit in the summer. And remember, you do have a wide selection of materials and sizes from which to choose so even if you need a smaller scale U. S. flag, or if you are working within a tight budget, you can fly your Old Glory with pride.

Some older homes will also fly some of our historical US flags as well to showcase the beauty and metamorphic quality of our country. The Bennington Flag, one of our first battle flags and the Betsy Ross flags are both popular options and look particularly appropriate hanging from older, majestic homes. Additionally, many residences and businesses will also fly a state flag below their American flag to show their pride in both their country and their home state of the Union. Of course, in the U. S. , if you choose to fly multiple flags, make sure you follow the Flag Display Guidelines provided it the U. S. flag code.

As the World Cup Soccer Tournament approaches, patriotic fever will likewise grip the tournament team countries. Whether you are in England, Mexico, Angola or the Ukraine, you’ll want to show your support for your World Cup team. Of course, the easiest way is to make sure you bring your country flag to the tournament games to inspire the players on the field and show your patriotic support to the world!

If you are lucky enough to go to a game, face painting the appropriate flag of the world is popular, as well as wearable flags that come on t-shirts, hats and other apparel. Hand held flags can provide a great option for children, while larger flags have often been popular as capes and as banners for adults.

Another great way to show your spirit is to buy purchasing an official National Team Jersey for your country. You can go to the FIFA World Cup store () and shop by continent for the jersey for you country. You’ll also find lanyards, hats, jackets and bags. If you are celebrating the World Cup tournament, don’t forget to incorporate this year’s mascot, GOLEO VI, the lion in with your gear. This King of Parties should unite everyone cheering on this great sport and provide a positive spirit for good sportsmanship so that everyone can get behind great soccer and the best winning team.

No matter which patriotic event you are celebrating, in the U. S. or abroad, the other easy way to show your spirit is by using the colors of your flag, or even your continent. Africa’s pan-African colors of red, green and yellow are a great example if you want to support Africa as a country or specific countries like Ghana and Tunisia! If you want to be a little off beat, check out colorful hair dyes like Manic Panic and incorporate your countries’ colors on your head, or look for fun and silly patriotic pet gear so your dog or cat can show their own patriotism!

Whether you are participating in a global event like the World Cup or in national events like Independence Day or July 4th, showing you pride for your country can be fun and creative. From traditional symbols like U. S. flags and flags of the world, to fun iterations of patriotic displays from face painting to hair dye, have fun showing your patriotic spirit this summer!

NFL Mock Draft 2010, Rounds 1 and 2: How Far Will Carlos Dunlap Fall?

2010 NFL Mock Draft, Rounds 1 and 2 Only four-and-a-half months until the highly anticipated 2010 NFL draft. Can you feel the excitement in the air, or are you too busy feeling the holiday vibe?As per usual, I will update my mock draft every single week. Without further ado, let’s get to it! 1. Cleveland Browns—Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback, Notre Dame Alright, let’s get over the fact that both Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen went to Notre Dame. It does not mean that they are virtually the same exact quarterback. The perception that Clausen is a Quinn 2. 0 just isn’t fair and just shows foolish judgment. Jimmy Clausen is a slightly better quarterback than Jake Locker is. Clausen has had to go up against some of the better colleges in all of college football. 2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers—Ndamukong Suh, Defensive Tackle, Nebraska I’ve received some criticism for this pick because people think that Tampa Bay taking Suh is just getting plain old. So what?If you want the best player available, you take Suh. He will make a perfect fit for their scheme, and will go great with Roy Miller on the defensive line. I can’t see Tampa Bay going any other way, but with the Nebraskan phenom. 3. St. Louis Rams—Jake Locker, Quarterback, Washington Kyle Boller is great! Did you see the game he had on Sunday? Only kidding, he still is terrible. If St. Louis doesn’t draft a quarterback in the first round, I will drive to Missouri to personally set fire to the houses of the people that made the decision. Jake Locker has a great arm, size, and all the tools that are needed to be a great NFL quarterback. Now only if he had weapons to throw to. . . Well, there are rounds 2-7, I guess. 4. Detroit Lions—Gerald McCoy, Defensive Tackle, Oklahoma Normally I would have Russell Okung going here, but for some reason the Lions’ offensive line coach, George Yarno, said he liked the way Jeff Backus has been playing as of late. I guess giving up 7. 5 sacks through 11 games is acceptable. But then again, Detroit has won a mere two games in the last two seasons!Gerald McCoy is a stud, no doubt. Detroit will love to have this guy to dominate on their defensive line. Don’t be surprised if he winds up being the defensive rookie of the year next season. 5. Kansas City Chiefs—Russell Okung, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma State Kansas City will not have any success throwing the ball if they can’t keep Matt Cassel on his feet. In nine games played, Branden Albert has already surrendered nine sacks. What has happened to this guy!?Russell Okung is a must-pick selection. He’s easily the best offensive tackle in the nation. Kansas City would be imbeciles if they didn’t make this pick. 6. Washington Redskins—Sam Bradford, Quarterback, Oklahoma Daniel Snyder loves going after big-name players. Albert Haynesworth, DeAngelo Hall, Clinton Portis, and Brian Orakpo for example?Jason Campbell may never succeed in the NFL, especially not with the Washington Redskins. He is done. Sam Bradford’s arm will be fine by the time the combine rolls around. He will impress scouts, propelling him into the top-10. 7. Buffalo Bills—Ryan Mallett, Quarterback, Arkansas The likes of Rolando McClain, Dan Williams, and Eric Berry sound intriguing, but the fact of the matter is that the Bills have two terrible quarterbacks on their roster in Ryan Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards. Seriously, does this team expect to win more than five games next year with either one of these two at the helm? I hope not. Ryan Mallett has had a great season with Arkansas. Is he a reach at No. 7? Possibly. But Buffalo needs a QB and Ryan Mallett needs Buffalo. 8. Oakland Raiders—Rolando McClain, Inside Linebacker, Alabama Perhaps not the biggest need, but when you think about it, Kirk Morrison is set to be a free-agent when this season comes to an end. Rolando McClain had a monster game in the SEC championship against the Florida Gators, only cementing his status as a top-10 pick. Al Davis, if your brain hasn’t turned into dust already, draft McClain. You won’t regret it. 9. Denver Broncos—Dan Williams, Nose Tackle, Tennessee Dan Williams is quickly rising up the draft boards in the last few weeks. He had a tremendous season with the Volunteers this year. Denver lacks a great nose tackle. Ronald Fields? Not going to cut it. A player like Williams will. 10. San Francisco 49ers from Carolina—Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee It’ll come down to either Eric Berry or Joe Haden with this pick. I will give the 49ers Berry, though. Berry is considered to be the best overall athlete in the entire draft? Why not? This guy is the best safety to come out in a long time. 11. Seattle Seahawks—Bruce Campbell, Offensive Tackle, Maryland The Seahawks offensive line has many holes that need to be filled by new talent. Max Unger was a good pick in the 2009 draft. Walter Jones has missed the entire season. Despite his intent to play in 2010, Jones is not starting material any longer. Bruce Campbell is what the Seahawks need. They won’t regret this choice. 12. San Francisco 49ers—Joe Haden, Cornerback, Florida I know, it seems crazy. Joe Haden and Eric Berry with the first two picks? Let me explain why. San Francisco has one of the worst secondaries in the league, for starters. With Eric Berry and Joe Haden in, the 49ers will automatically have one of the best secondaries in the league. They could trade one of these two picks for a first in 2011, or trade Nate Clements for a second- or third-round choice. 13. Houston Texans—Taylor Mays, Safety, USC Taylor Mays falling this far would be terrific for the Texans. They need help in the secondary. Eugene Wilson is not going to do the job for Houston’s secondary. Mays can step in right away and dominate. Mays and Bernard Pollard would make a great duo at safety. 14. Tennessee Titans—Donovan Warren, Cornerback, Michigan Nick Harper is far past his prime. The reason for the Titans terrible secondary is because he can’t cover for crap. His contract expires at the end of the season. Unless the Titans are stupid, they will let him walk. Donovan Warren will be a day-one starter if they draft him. 15. Pittsburgh Steelers—Earl Thomas, Safety, Texans Troy Polamalu is injured often. When he is out, the Steelers are terrible. This shows how important one guy can be. With that said, Polamalu needs a partner along side him in the secondary. Ryan Clark and Tyrone Carter are both free-agents when this season is over. Earl Thomas can replace both of these guys. 16. New York Jets—Damian Williams, Wide Receiver, USC Damian Williams didn’t have the greatest game vs. Arizona last weekend, but nobody from USC really did. Braylon Edwards has dropped several key passes this year, once again. New York can let him go after this year. In conclusion, Mark Sanchez will want a new target. His former teammate sounds perfect. 17. Atlanta Falcons—Brandon Graham, Defensive End, Michigan Atlanta is one of the worst teams in the league at getting pressure on the quarterback. Atlanta lacks a strong defensive end on the opposite side of the aging Jonathan Abraham. Jamaal Anderson has been a bust thus far. Brandon Graham will step in to take his place. 18. Miami Dolphins—Terrence Cody, Nose Tackle, Alabama Terrence Cody has slipped as of late because of the fact that Dan Williams has surpassed him for the No. 1 nose tackle spot. Jason Ferguson turns 34 soon, and his contract expires in March. Miami will need a replacement. 19. Baltimore Ravens—Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State The Ravens have very few targets on offense. Derrick Mason will likely hang it up after this season is over. Keep in mind, he already retired once. Dez Bryant, despite missing almost all season for the Cowboys, will be a top-20 pick with a strong combine. Joe Flacco needs weapons. He will get a great one in Bryant. 20. New York Giants—Brandon Spikes, Middle Linebacker, Florida Antonio Pierce is out for the season. Not to mention, he is near the end of his illustrious career with the Giants. New York has a few needs on defense that they need to fix. Middle linebacker is the main one. Brandon Spikes was dominant with the Gators in college. He will be dominant with the Giants in the NFL. 21. Jacksonville Jaguars—Tim Tebow, Quarterback, Florida It seems that the Jaguars drafting Tim Tebow is pretty much inevitable at this point. When the governor starts talking about him, it’ll likely happen. Tebow has stated that he will play any position that a team in the NFL sees fit. Will it be at quarterback? Doubtful. But he will be absolutely stellar in the wildcat formation. 22. New England Patriots—C. J. Spiller, Running Back, Clemson How can having Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and C. J. Spiller on one team be fair? It shouldn’t. Laurence Maroney is the definition of inconsistent. Fred Taylor will never start again. Sammy Morris is a decent third-string running back. Spiller is a dynamic playmaker who is tough to stop. 23. Green Bay Packers—Charles Brown, Offensive Tackle, USC Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers gets hit on almost every dropback the guy takes. That is preposterous! They need serious help if they expect Rodgers to continue to be injury-free for a long time. Charles Brown is the perfect fit for the Packers offensive line scheme. 24. Dallas Cowboys—Anthony Davis, Offensive Tackle, Rutgers Flozell Adams is likely to retire soon. He’s near the end of his career, and obviously wearing down physically. Jerry Jones usually goes after big names, but Anthony Davis, despite not being a big name, is the right pick for the Cowboys. 25. Philadelphia Eagles—Mike Iupati, Offensive Guard, Idaho Andy Reid loves big offensive lineman. Reid actually drafted a guard in the middle of the first round 6 years ago. That guard was Shawn Andrews. Thus far, Andrews has been a bust. Just chalk it up to a great idea that didn’t pan out. Mike Iupati is a great pick for the Eagles here. 26. Seattle Seahawks from Denver—Jahvid Best, Running Back, California Jahvid Best will still be available when this pick rolls around, that is unless he has a great combine. Justin Forsett has shown signs of stardom this year, but even with him playing extremely well, Jim Mora Jr. said Julius Jones would start over him upon his return from injury. 27. Arizona Cardinals—Jermaine Gresham, Tight End, Oklahoma Can you name the Arizona Cardinals starting tight end right now? I strongly doubt it. Anthony Becht and Ben Patrick have split time this year. Jermaine Gresham is miles better than both of these. His stock has obviously dropped because he missed his entire senior season. With that said, Grehsam will be another weapon for Kurt Warner to throw to, unless Warner retires. 28. Cincinnati Bengals—Ras-I Dowling, FS/CB, Virginia Cincinnati doesn’t have many needs, thus they will look for depth in one area that they could use it in. Morgan Trent as the nickel corner isn’t working out. In his rookie season, Ras-I Dowling will be able to play a lot of minutes in the nickel. 29. San Diego Chargers—Toby Gerhart, Running Back, Stanford I will likely get ripped from limb by limb for having Toby Gerhart going in the first round of the draft. The main reason that he’s not a projected first-round pick is because he’s a white running back. It’s like seeing the New Jersey Nets win a basketball game: it rarely happens. Toby Gerhart is a tough, physical, and smart runner. I see no reason why San Diego shouldn’t draft him. 30. Minnesota Vikings—Travis Lewis, Outside Linebacker, Oklahoma Haven’t changed my mind in the slightest. If Travis Lewis is there, the Vikings can and will select him. With E. J. Henderson out for the year, Minnesota’s linebackers will have to step it up more than ever. If they had Lewis, they worries would be non-existent. He’s not a middle linebacker, but Ben Leber can be if Henderson ever got hurt again. 31. Indianapolis Colts—Joseph Barksdale, Offensive Tackle, LSU Charlie Johnson will become a free-agent when this season comes to an end. Indy will need a replacement for him. The Colts will actually have a few needs when this season is over, despite the fact they are perfect right now. Joseph Barksdale isn’t a household name, but you will hear about him more and more as the next few months come along. 32. New Orleans Saints—Sean Weatherspoon, Outside linebacker, Missouri New Orleans has a few needs on defense, especially in the linebacking group. Sean Weatherspoon is of good value with the last pick in the first round. New Orleans would be foolish to pass on this guy. Round 2:33. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Greg Hardy, Defensive End, Ole Miss34. St. Louis Rams- Carlos Dunlap, Defensive End, Florida35. Cleveland Browns- Jonathan Dwyer, Running Back, Georgia Tech36. Detroit Lions- Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma37.
